The Art club at Jones College is not filled with individual projects like pottery, crafts or sketching, but instead it includes various types of group projects, some of which occur outdoors.

“We are helping here with the tennis court logos. This is the second time that the art club has done the tennis court logos or helped with them,” said Mark Brown club sponsor.

Brown explained how the previous project this semester involved painting signs to be used by students at football games. He also added that a future project will include the science department.

“I totally believe in giving back,” said Brown. “As you know, there are so many of our communities that are being improved. People are spending money on fixing towns and murals, so it is good for students to see how to do it on campus too.”

Brown explained the purpose of the club is to enhance the campus and students’ experiences by helping other departments and networking with the student body.

“You know a lot of people talk, and I believe in action,” said Brown. “I think it is important that if I tell them to do things in the community, I should exhibit that I’m doing those things.”

Brown added that the Art club allows him to supervise the projects while students learn how to participate in community, filling the roles needed in various settings. Depending on the semester schedule, the projects take place on his less busy days, which this semester are Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon.

“I’ve kind of taken it in a different direction where I want us to serve campus; and I think it is important to network and get out in public and be seen and heard,” said Brown. “In short, just do something. The reward is in itself, it is the work.”

Brown is seeking to expand the art club’s membership. The club has no fees, the project hours can be counted as community service hours and any major can attend. To get involved, students can contact Brown at mark.brown@jcjc.edu or he can be found at the Visual Arts Building.
