NEW TO NETFLIX: Girl Haunts Boy

New to Netflix is an original film that was released on Oct.10. This movie tells the story of a teen boy who is being haunted by a century-year-old ghost.

This film is rated PG and is a part of the fantasy genre. It has elements of mystery, comedy and romance. The cast has actresses like Peyton List who starred in popular Disney shows like “Jessie” and “Bunk’d” and Andrea Navedo who starred in “Jane the Virgin.”

The movie starts out with an opening scene of a girl in a museum, and the time setting seemed to be older because of the cars and wardrobe. The audience soon learns that the girl’s name is Bea. She is on a school field trip and from the start one can tell she is a rebel.

She kept touching artifacts in the museum she was not supposed to, and she also wandered into an area that was off-limits. There she discovered a strange gold ring. Because of her need to break the rules, she steals it. Upon leaving the museum with the ring in hand she is struck by a car, then the movie changes time settings to a more modern day.

One of the main characters is a boy named Cole Sanchez. Cole just moved to a new town with his widowed mother. They are both in the grieving process and looking for a fresh start. Cole starts to notice some odd things about his new home and school. His house is always making strange noises, and there is a girl named Lydia at school who told him he was surrounded by death. The mystery there can immediately keep one entertained.

One day after school he ends up finding an old red book in his closet that contains pictures of a girl. While looking at the contents within the book a strange gold ring falls out of it. Cole is unaware that the ring has fallen out until he steps on it the next morning. As soon as the ring is put on the ghost of Bea appears. They both learn soon enough that the ring is the source of Bea’s ability to appear and move about freely.

Because Bea once attended the same school Cole goes to, she begs him to take her with him. While there he ran into his friend Lydia who sensed something was wrong with him. At a glance, Lydia notices the ring on Cole’s hand before he leaves in a hurry. She goes to her father’s bookstore and researches the ring where she learns that it’s actually one of a pair and is said to be cursed. Lydia informs Cole of the curse, and he contemplates whether to tell Bea about it or try and resolve the situation himself.

The characters were very enjoyable, and Cole and Bea’s relationship made this movie heartwarming to watch. Grief was such a big topic in this movie, and it was talked about in a very healthy manner which was inspiring. The ending of this film was bittersweet and interesting.  Make sure to watch “Girl Haunts Boy” out on Netflix now.
