MOVIE SUGGESTIONS: Flicks and Fannels, the best of Fall cinema

The cold weather and fall scenery evoke a familiar nostalgia for many, and what better way to kindle that feeling than with a few heartwarming flicks. Whether one is in the mood for heartfelt dramas or simple romances, this month’s selection will be sure to get everyone in the fall spirit, so cozy up with a blanket, maybe a cup of cider and enjoy!

DEAD POETS SOCIETY

“Dead Poets Society” (1989) is an inspiring and emotionally-stimulating movie that will warm your heart while also managing to bring out a few tears. Rated 8.1/10 on IMDb and 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, this film is sure to light a spark for those who watch it.

The story follows a new English teacher, played by Robin Williams, beginning his job at an all-boys preparatory school known for its demanding nature and traditions. The teacher uses unusual ways to reach out and help the students break out of their shells. The movie’s central theme revolves around the latin words “Carpe Diem,” meaning “seize the day.”

This film manages to capture both the beautiful moments of life as well as dark ones. “Dead Poets Society” can be streamed on Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and Youtube.

INDIAN SUMMER

“Indian Summer” (1993) is a romantic comedy about eight friends who reunite after 20 years for a week-long reunion at a summer camp they attended as kids. This time though, they are all facing very adult problems.

The film takes a slower approach to storytelling, focusing more on the relationships of the characters rather than overall movement of the plot. The movie envelopes a feel-good approach that focuses on themes such as friendship and growing up. It’s the perfect low-conflict, light-hearted movie for those wanting a relaxing night in.

THE SECRET GARDEN

“The Secret Garden” (1993) is a cozy, heartwarming and fantastical movie, perfect for those nostalgia seekers. The movie revolves around a young girl who is sent to live with her neglectful uncle after her parents’ death. Bitterly alone, she begins to explore her uncle’s estate where she discovers a hidden garden. There, along with one of the servant’s boys, she begins to restore it back to its original state.

Boasting 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie seems to be loved by almost everyone. “The Secret Garden” comforts those watching, revolving around themes of healing and friendship. The film can be seen on Amazon Prime Video, Youtube and Google Play Movies.

These three movies will be sure to bring those who watch them lots of smiles, laughs and even a few tears. Whether one watches them alone or in the company of others, these films are bound to kindle feelings of nostalgia that linger long after the credits roll.
