Movie Review: Netflix’s Hot Frosty

Just in time for the holidays, Netflix released a new original film on Nov. 13 about a snowman that magically comes to life.

This romantic and comedic film, rated TV-PG, has many familiar faces including Lacey Chabert, who played in “Mean Girls” and Dustin Milligan, who starred in “Schitt’s Creek.”

The audience meets a widowed Kathy who owns a diner in a town called Hope Springs, New York. On her way to work, she stops to bring lunch to her friends, Mel and Theo. Kathy’s friend, Mel, gifts her a red scarf that is “destined” to be with her. In downtown, there is a snow sculpture competition, and Kathy stops to admire the snowmen. She notices that one of the snowmen lacks a scarf. Kathy puts the red scarf on the muscular sculpture, takes a photo and heads home.

The film shows the snowman coming to life, and he starts running around and yelling. He and an elderly couple end up startling each other, and the snowman falls through a store window. In the morning, Kathy discovers him talking to the other snowmen. He had found a a pair of overalls that had the name “Jack” sewn into them, so she assumed that was his name. Jack explains that he knows her and that she took a picture of him. Kathy, concerned that he has hyperthermia, takes him to the town doctor. The doctor discovers that Jack is below freezing, but he appears to be fine and happy. Because of the accident with the store window, the sheriff is out looking for the criminal. Kathy ends up taking Jack back to her house to keep him safe. She learns that Jack is affected by the heat and keeping him cool prevents him from “melting.”

Jack is a quick learner and ends up fixing the desperate repairs Kathy’s house needs. A neighbor ends up asking Jack to help her put in her new light and soon he agrees to help decorate the middle school dance. Jack becomes a beloved and helpful character to everyone in town.

Jack ends up asking Kathy to the dance and she agrees. While they’re there, Jack confesses he is falling in love with her but doesn’t want to leave her because he is unsure of how much time he has left.

During the town’s annual Christmas party, the sheriff shows up and arrests Jack for breaking the store window. Kathy knows that if Jack goes to jail he will melt, so she tries to come up with a plan to save him.

This movie is great for the holidays and contains the perfect amount of Christmas magic. It was sweet, funny and heartwarming. Grab a blanket, some eggnog, and stream “Hot Frosty” on Netflix.
