On Feb. 8, freshman Joshua Butler competed in a powerlifting meet. This called for them to lift insanely heavy weights in different styles. Butler noted his favorite lift as being the deadlift which requires him to lift a heavy weight straight from the ground while standing.
“It was a huge learning experience but so amazing,” Butler said. “I met a lot of really cool people and the atmosphere was amazing. Every time I stepped on the platform to lift, I felt so much support not only from my friends but from all the spectators and other lifters that were there.”
Butler was very appreciative about the companionship of the sport. After competing in nine different lifts, Butler placed 2nd in his weight class.
“Well, I’ll be honest, I didn’t really think I was going to place or get anything since it was my first meet,” Butler said. “After I got second, I was extremely happy because like I said, I didn’t expect to get anything, but at the same time it, it pushed me to want more because my goal is to be the strongest, not just the second strongest.”
Butler will continue his training as he hopes to place first next time in his next lifting meet.
