Lethal Company is an indie game developed by Zeekerss that is about scavenging incredibly dangerous moons for loot either all by yourself or with a group of four (unless you use mods). In Lethal Company the player must land on a moon and make their way to the entrance of the randomly-generated facility. The player will then search for scrap and make their way back to the ship to promptly leave. That may sound simple and quite easy to do, but there is ample reason as to why Lethal Company is considered a horror game.
On all the various moons and all the possible facilities that the player will be searching through, there will be one constant, monsters. As of writing this, there are currently 20 possible monsters for the player to encounter on any single moon. While some are more common than others, it does not mean any are to be taken lightly. Players who make that mistake will meet a very quick end.
I will not go over every single monster in the game for I believe that everyone should have the great experience of seeing a Bracken’s glowing eyes peering through the darkness like two stars staring deep into your soul. However, I will go over one of the more common ones.
The Bunker Spider is an extremely large spider that will typically stick to walls unless a player is unlucky enough to walk onto one of its many webs strewn about the facility. If a player is unfortunate enough to become the prey of the Bunker Spider, it will take the body of the player, wrap it in webbing and then hang it on a wall for others to see. Afterwards, the Bunker Spider will typically go dormant once again and wait for another unlucky player to touch one of its webs. Interestingly, if you avoid all webs and come face to face with the beast it won’t move at all. The in-game lore behind this is that the spider has been caught unaware and has frozen in self-defense.
After hearing about the terrible monsters that await within the facilities on the moons, the player may question why they must obtain this scrap. The reason for this is that the player is given a “company quota” they must reach in a time limit of three days or risk what the company calls “disciplinary action.” Though, truth be told, this “disciplinary action” is simply opening the air lock mid-flight, expunging the players into the vast openness of space.
Lethal Company is a video game where often, no matter what the players choose, it will most likely end in death. In spite of this, it is a fun co-op experience gaining a huge following for an indie game. Currently, Lethal Company has 48,250 players and has sold 10 million copies.
