Men’s basketball flexes mid-season form

Jones has started their basketball season off with a bang, by going 4-1 with many impressive wins. However, Nov. 9 was their first big test as the Bobcats traveled to play the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs.

Jones won the first half by the score of 45-34. When the buzzer sounded at the end of the second half, the Bobcats stood victorious with a score of 86-77. Dimp Pernell, who was named the MACCC player of the week before the game, continued his hot start by scoring 25 points in 38 minutes on the court. Pernell shot 2-3 from the three-point line and 9-14 on field goals. Dimp’s twin brother, Ky Pernell, was second in the scoring column with a robust 21 points.

The Bobcats had four of the five starters score double digits, with two of them having double digit rebounds as well. Jones bested the Bulldogs in just about every stat column possible. The Bobcats out rebounded Gulf Coast 41-35. Jones shot 42% beyond the three-point arc, while Gulf Coast only shot 32%. Jones outshot the Bulldogs, 53% to 31%.

Jones has started the season off with some great shooting, with 54% in field goals. The most impressive number that Jones can claim is a 49% three-point shooting as a team.

Jones will look to continue playing good quality basketball as the schedule begins to ramp up. The last home game of 2023 is Dec. 4 against Meridian Community College. They will return to Ellisville January 8, 2024.
