Lady Bobcats basketball defeat Copiah-Lincoln

On Thursday, the Lady Bobcats basketball team were pitted against Copiah-Lincoln Community College in their last regular season game of the year. JC won 81-60.

Coming into the game, the ladies only had two losses the entire season, with one coming against out-of-state competition in Shelton State Community College (Ala.) and division rival East Central Community College. They also ranked #4 in the nation coming into the week. Working inside the paint is key for the Bobcats, as they only average 4.8 three-point shots made per game. This can also be supported by the exceptional rebound margin average of 12.4. Some might say that defense is their specialty, as they average 6.7 blocks per game, which is the second highest rate in the nation.

With Thursday being “Sophomore Night,” it’s important to see just how important some of the current sophomores have been to the team’s success. Center Kyla Weathersby is the perfect example of this, earning the team’s highest rebounding average at 8.7 per game. Forward Maya Jones compliments her well in the rebound category, as she averages 6.1 per game herself. Guard Breonca Ducksworth has also done her fair share of work, as she dishes out the rock better than anyone on the team with an assist average of 4.8 per game.

While the Co-Lin game may have marked the last game of the regular season, the Lady Bobcats aren’t done yet. Don’t be surprised if they not only take the MACJC title, but go on to make a run on the national level as well.

Note: State tournament begins today (Monday, Feb. 25) at Jones with the Lady Bobcats playing at 5:30 p.m. and the men playing Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
