Jones spring athletic teams dominate

The Jones MACCC champs will participate in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament May 13-16. The softball team won a national championship in 2018.

The spring semester at Jones has been an overall success with all bobcat teams having a win percentage  of .500 or better, and the fans, especially students, have come out to support the Bobcats in every way possible. With COVID-19 creating one of the most difficult times students and faculty have had to face, it was sports that allowed much of the public to share common ground and enjoy entertainment.

The Lady Bobcats softball team has been dominant in the MACCC in 2021. The Lady Bobcats won the MACCC Softball Tournament May 8. In their most recent matchup, the Lady Bobcats were able to defeat Baton Rouge Community College and ultimately sweep the series in a double header. The Lady Bobcats only allowed two points in both games while the softball team averaged 10 points per game during the series. Now the Lady Bobcats will be playing in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament starting May 13-16. See the Lady Bobcats on jcjc.tv Thursday, May 13 at 3 p.m. as they face Northwest Mississippi.

The Bobcat baseball team is familiar with the term adversity. At the start of the season, the baseball team fell to their first three games and later went on a roller coaster ride until they found some consistency. The Bobcats have ended their season at 25-20. During a critical final stretch to make it to the playoffs, the Bobcats went 8-4 in their last 12 games earning them a play in game. The play in game determined the final seed in the Region 23 tournament and pitted the Bobcats against Hinds CC Eagles in a best of three series. This was the 12th straight season the baseball team qualified for postseason play.

The women’s tennis team has gone on an unprecedented run during the 2021 season as they finish the season at 20-0. The Lady Bobcats has dominated all of their opponents and won all their games by a margin of 6 points or higher. No team has scored more than three points against them. The Lady Bobcats are the new Region 23 champions after defeating Mississippi Gulf Coast 5-0. They played in the national championship tournament in Arizona last week and ended 14th in the nation.

The men’s tennis team had an impressive run in the 2021 season as they finished with an overall record of 17-4 and 14-2 in MACCC play. The team was able to make it to the Region 23 Championship game but ultimately fell to the #13 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast team 1-5 with a trip to Texas on the line. The Bobcats will play in the national championship tournament in Texas May 17- May 21.

Both soccer teams have had great success in the spring campaign of the season. The men’s soccer team posted a strong 8-3 overall record, 6-3 in the MACCC, and 6-0 while playing home games. The playoffs will begin May 18 and end May 23.

The women’s team also has posted an impressive record into the season. The Lady Bobcats are 10-1 overall, 8-1 in MACCC conference play, and they are also undefeated at home. The final regular game of the regular season will be played against Co-Lin Community College in Wesson, May 14. The playoffs will begin May 18 and will run until May 23. The National Championship Tournament will be played in Georgia June 4-June 9.

The Jones College cheer squad recently competed at the Universal Cheerleaders Association, where they won the national championship in the Open Coed division. The team had placed second in 2019 and 2020 before upsetting Shelton State, which had won the division for 13 straight years.
