Basketball season is finally tipping-off

With basketball season over the halfway point now, both the men and women teams are in great spots thus far in the season.

The men currently have an overall record of 13-3 with a 5-3 record inside of the conference. Sophomore guard SharDarrion Allen leads the team in points per game with 17.7 as well as rebounds per game at 9.6. Sophomore guard Casey Smith Jr. has also been a vital part to the team’s offense, averaging 7.1 assists per game. On the defensive side, Zachariah Malone has led the team with 41 blocks, and Allen leads in steals at 41.

The women, ranked #11 in the nation, own a 14-2 record with a 8-0 record in their conference. They’ve pulled off some notable wins over Shelton St. (Ala.), who was ranked #5 at the time, and Wallace St. (Ala.), who was ranked #22. Redshirt sophomore Keyara Jones leads the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game, while sophomore Destiny Haymer leads in assists per game at 6.7. Sophomore LaMiracle Sims averages a double-double with 10.4 points per game, which is the second highest rate on the team, and 11.1 rebounds per game, which leads the team.

As both teams continue the season, look for the men to improve their conference record, and expect the women to continue their climb up the national rankings.
