In today’s society, securing and keeping a job of any kind can be difficult. This trend can even extend to celebrities. Recently, “The Cosby show” actor Geoffrey Owens was spotted bagging groceries at his local Trader Joe’s. Pictures were taken of him, and social media blew up with the news. Some outlets didn’t have the nicest headlines. The Daily Mail posted a headline that read, “From learning lines to serving the long line!” According to the Washington Post, “He worked at Trader Joe’s for 15 months before quitting because of the recent influx of attention.”
In response to the frenzy of attention, Owens said in an interview to Good Morning America, “There is no job that is better than another job. It might pay better, it might have better benefits, it might look better on a résumé and on paper. But, actually, it’s not better. Every job is worthwhile and valuable.” Many people from across the work force have spoken out in support of Owens. Journalist Dan Rather tweeted, “Demonizing hard work while abetting grifters enriching themselves on tax dollars is a potent stew of hypocrisy and irony.” There is no shame in having a day job. Instead of shaming someone because of their job, respect their hustle and need to put food on the table.
