Should class begin later?

Why are some students not performing well in the classroom? The answer to this question may be quite simple: lack of sleep. Students spend hours in the classroom doing classwork, at home doing homework, at work earning a living and in public socializing with friends. With multiple responsibilities, most students do not go to bed until late. Most classes begin at 8:30 a.m., but some begin even earlier. For students living on campus, this is late enough, but for those who commute, it is still a little early. Sleepcenter.ucla.edu shows that students who begin class later in the day perform better. Students should choose classes that begin 8:30-9 a.m. or later to see an improvement in grades.
