Girl Scouts suing newly named ‘Scouts’ for trademark infringement

A lawsuit was filed in the Manhattan federal court this week against the newly named “Scouts” of America by the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. This lawsuit argues that the girl scout brand would be damaged by the inclusion of girls into the ranks of the “Scouts.”

According to the Girl Scouts, “We did what any brand, company, corporation or organization  would do to protect its intellectual property, the value of its brand in the marketplace and to defend its good name.”

The two groups have been at odds since last year when the then Boy Scouts made the decision to include girls into the organization. The Girl Scouts are now accusing the scouts of trademark infringement, unfair competition, and public confusion.

Instead of fighting for a name, the two groups should come together to form a solitary organization that teaches children the importance of honor, truth, compassion and survival. The two organizations could have the power to teach things like fire-building, sewing, camping and other skills.
