Cambridge Analytica, a company that uses data to appeal to audiences and voters, has recently been in the news because of their access to Facebook users’ personal information. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg said that all of the data was collected without permission. In a statement he said, “This was a breach of trust between Cambridge Analytica and Facebook. But it was also a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us and expect us to protect it. We need to fix that.”
It was originally reported that Cambridge Analytica had obtained data from at least 50 million people, but that number has risen dramatically. As it stands over 87 million people have been affected by this scandal, more than half being United States citizens. In an effort to ease the tension caused by this shameful crime, company policy makers plan to revise Facebook’s privacy clause. While Facebook remains under fire for this scandal, investors and users suffer equally.
Users were informed if their information was gathered by Cambridge Analytica via Facebook on April 6.
