On Jan. 13, a federal judge from California blocked the Trump administration’s rule that allowed employers to refuse to cover birth control for moral or religious reasons. This block allowed 15 states to back out of this ruling. Before the Affordable Care Act, individual insurers and employers could choose whether or not to cover birth control unless a state had a contraception coverage mandate.
According to a recent poll by PerryUndem, nearly 75 percent of voters believe that access to affordable birth control affects a family’s financial situation. This is due to contraceptives making up an estimated 30 to 44 percent of all out-of-pocket health care spending for women.
