For years, the diagnosis of HIV was a death sentence. With the advances in medical technology, medicines and more those living with the virus have been granted their lives back.
According to The Washington Post, a successful organ transplant happened between an HIV positive donor and an HIV positive recipient. This surgery allowed the anonymous recipient to be off dialysis for the first time in a year.
Nina Martinez, the donor, said in an interview with the Post, “Society perceives me, and people like me, as people who bring death, and I can’t figure out any better way to show that people like me can bring life.”
Transplants like these could open up new lives for those living with HIV. It’s incredible what medical science can do.
