Phi Theta Kappa is an accredited organization that students can become involved in at Jones County Junior College. To be eligible for membership, students must have a 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours. PTK is committed to their four ideals of leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service. PTK’s dedication to service is shown in what they call “Honors in Action Projects.”
“Service is a critical component to helping our communities and moving forward in a global marketplace and world,” said Julie Atwood, PTK sponsor.
PTK members participate in local events such as HeartWalk and Relay for Life in Jones County. Members have completed local projects such as awareness campaigns on how to prevent the spread of the flu virus and how to become an organ donor. Last year, PTK students sponsored a campus-wide voter registration drive.
On Oct. 3, they hosted a table to promote National “Without Stigma Day,” where students pledged to be supportive of those who need assistance in coping with various issues like post-traumatic stress disorder, stress, depression and domestic violence.
PTK will continue to have upcoming service projects on campus this year. On Oct. 19, Rho Sigma will host a booth for a “No More” campaign, encouraging students to say No More to domestic violence. On Nov. 9, a booth will be hosted regarding the warning signs and treatment goals for PTSD. On Nov. 16, a suicide awareness booth will be hosted. During the week of Dec. 5-9, events will be held in conjunction with National Stress Less Week, which is the week before finals.
In addition to on-campus events, many students also volunteer at animal rescue leagues around the Laurel and Hattiesburg areas. Students who are involved in PTK will reap the benefits of meeting new people and forming new friendships. Universities and future employers often check to see if applicants were in PTK, which can be a great reference for students. PTK gives students “soft skills” and experience in leadership that helps students become well-rounded.
PTK offers many opportunities for scholarships that students would otherwise not be granted without their involvement in the organization. Members of PTK do not only glean scholarships as a result of their involvement, but they also receive many opportunities to enhance their leadership skills and to network with others.
The abundant service opportunities help students become more civically minded and gives them a chance to make a difference in the communities they call home. PTK is a rewarding organization to become involved with and greatly aids students in progressing their college careers.
