The last male northern white rhino died March 19 due to infections and age-related problems. The 45-year-old rhino, Sudan, lived on conservation in Kenya where he was surrounded by guards to protect him from poachers. There are two female white rhinos still alive. Sudan’s genetic material was preserved for future hopes of artificially inseminating one of the females.
In Asia, it is believed that the rhino horns can cure many ailments. Therefore, poachers seek after rhinos. There are five remaining species of rhinos in the world, and they are all considered threatened by poachers. Researchers hope that the death of Sudan brings awareness to the consequences of poaching and trade.
