BTS’ ‘Dynamite’ rises to the top

For the past several weeks, one song has climbed in popularity. The song Dynamite by Korean pop sensation BTS has broken many records since its release on Aug. 21. In the first 24-hours of its release, the song reached 100 million views, beating the earlier record-holding group Black Pink.  In the past few days, BTS has risen to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with their song Dynamite.

According to Big Hit Entertainment and BTS themselves, “Dynamite is a Disco, Pop single that sings of joy and confidence, bringing a fresh surge of much-needed ‘energy’ to reinvigorate the global community.”

This song also pays tribute to the ace of the United States Pop artists, Michael Jackson. Some of the members perform several of his iconic dance moves throughout the music video, from his moonwalk to the toe stand and others.

Dynamite has a funky vibe, most reminiscent of the 1970s. From the vibrant colors to the wardrobe, BTS is taking us to a Disco. Along with channeling Michael Jackson, there is a distinct Beatles vibe in the style of clothes worn and the backdrop that appears in the video.  This song appeals to many for its quirky, upbeat music and catchy lyrics that can get anyone to move to the beat and smile at the same time.  The choreography features addicting movements that highlight the distinct charms of each BTS member.  The song can also bring out the fun side of people during these troubled times by just letting them let loose and break free.  BTS has given many people a light in the dark when they feel lost, and though this may be the band’s first all English song, their fans find BTS’s other songs uplifting and inspiring. These people are BTS’s fan base better known as A.R.M.Y (Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth), and the members say they would not be where they are today without them.

The lyrics to this song give the feeling that the band is trying to be a light (or in this case an explosion) during the pandemic and trying to lift the world’s spirits in a funky and fun way.  While not on an album yet, this hit single may appear on the group’s next album with past songs like ‘ON’ and Black Swan to name two.  Each member of BTS deserves credit for the success of this latest song, but the group believes the success of Dynamite is all thanks to their fan base.  According to BTS, without the help of A.R.M.Y, much of their career would not be possible. This was shown when BTS won four of their nominations at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards.  Dynamite can be streamed on YouTube, Spotify, and Amazon Music along with many of BTS’s other great songs.
