The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards took place last Sunday night in Madison Square Garden. While the show didn’t have an official host, Michael Key and Jordan Peele provided comedic commentary and filled in the audience throughout the show.
Rihanna opened and closed the show with performances along with two other sets during the show. She performed “Don’t Stop The Music,” “Needed Me,” “Pour It Up,” “Stay,” “Diamonds” and “Love On The Brain.”
Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj performed their new song, “Side To Side.” Future performed “Commas,” and Beyonce put on a set that included “Hold Up,” “I’m Sorry” and “Formation.”
Britney Spears made a come back at the VMAs for the first time in over a decade with her collaboration with G-Eazy, called “Make Me…”
The Chainsmokers and Halsey put on “Closer.”
The most noteworthy moment of the show seemed to be when Drake awarded Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award and confessed his love for her in front of the crowd.
Beyonce took home 6 awards out of 11 nominations. She received Best Choreography, Best Editing, Video of the Year, Best Pop Video and Best Cinematography, all for “Formation.” She also won Best Female Video for “Hold Up.”
Drake won the Best Hip-Hop Video for his “Hotline Bling.” Rihanna and Calvin Harris received the Best Male Video for “This Is What You Came For.” DNCE won Artist to Watch.
Overall, the VMAs were eventful and historic.
