Game Column: Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 is a third person horde shooter created by Arrowhead Game Studio.           Helldivers 2 is based in the year 2184. In this game, a helldiver, an “elite” soldier that is drop podded in from orbit, fights for the glory of the human race, also known collectively as Super Earth.

The helldiver has three main enemies: automatons, terminids, and friendly fire. Automatons are unstoppable robots of war and destruction; the player better be packing some armor penetration otherwise they are going to have an absolutely terrible time. Terminids are an unstoppable wave of alien bugs that vary in size from the common Scavenger to the absolute unit of Bile Titans; flamethrowers are highly recommended, just avoid roasting teammates. Friendly fire, the most heartbreaking of all betrayals will always come from those closest; at the time however, it is forgivable when in Helldivers 2 you regularly call down orbital bombardments of varying explosiveness.

In Helldivers 2, the player and ideally three other comrades are drop podded into a mission consisting of either Automaton enemies or Terminid enemies.  Helldivers 2 missions will vary based on what enemy the players have decided to combat; for example, on terminid planets the character will be assigned to taking down a Bile Titan, while on automaton planets the helldiver will be assigned to destroying refueling stations. The player then navigates to their objective, destroying any bug holes or automaton bases that they come across. Once the mission is completed the players are then allowed to extract whenever they wish, but REAL helldivers will stay and destroy any and all outposts on the planet before extracting. When the extract is called in, the players must then hold off against the final waves of the planet before the extraction shuttle can set down; be careful to not stand underneath for it will result in death.

Helldivers 2 might be another third person horde shooter but it does this amazingly well. The gameplay loop and the community are all very fun to be apart of, and the devs actually like to play into this, specifically a dev by the name of Joel. Joel will sometimes either make a mission an absolute living hell or he may call in reinforcements just as your entire squad gets wiped. Joel is truly a wild card but a welcome one as it solidifies that Helldivers 2 devs are here and listening. In fact they just recently dropped an update to bring giant robots into the game. The twist is these robots are trying to kill you so it’s a plus.

Helldivers 2 is a definite must recommend for any gamers that enjoy feeling both an absolute power fantasy and at the same time a great simulation for what it was like in war as all you can see of the automatons shooting at you are their red eyes in the dark forest and their bolts of plasma zipping past your head.
