Bobcats look to hand MGCCC their first loss

On Thursday at Bobcat Stadium, Jones College (2-1) hosted the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs (3-0) at 7 p.m in what was sure to be one of the toughest games so far.

The Bobcats were coming fresh off of a nail-biting 28-25 win against the Hinds Eagles in a game where special teams played a vital role in their victory. Jones saw an especially exceptional outing from running back Kalyn Grandberry (JC freshman), who rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. Immanuel Jones (JC freshman) led the way in the receiving category with 5 receptions for 31 yards, and Dontavious Porter (JC freshman) trailed not too far behind with 3 receptions for 28 yards. Two plays in particular were the force behind Jones as they pressed onto victory, both of which would come from the special teams unit. Midway through the 3rd quarter, defensive back Myron Stewart (JC freshman) would recover a botched snap in the endzone on a punt attempt to earn the Bobcats a touchdown. Later, defensive back Jonathan Hayes (JC sopohmore) would take a blocked field goal to the house for 6 points.

As for Gulf Coast, they were coming off of three straight games which were won in convincing fashion, having outscored their opponents with a combined score of 146-35 and averaging 458.3 offensive yards a game while allowing only 236 per game on the defensive side.

However, Gulf Coast’s perfect record and large stats would not phase Jones, as the Bobcats would come out on top 16-13 in yet another close game. Jones would rely heavily on their running game once again, carrying the ball a total of 49 times for 228 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Kalyn Grandberry would yet again put on another show, rushing for 171 yards on 28 attempts. The Bobcats will look to carry the momentum into this week as they take on the Southwest Community College Bears (2-1) at home at 7 p.m.
