On Friday, April 7, Jones County Junior College will host the Special Olympics for special needs participants from across the area. Featuring a multitude of games, this event gives them a chance to shine in front of loved ones and friends.
Before the main event starts, an opening ceremony will be held where the groups will walk out onto the stadium’s football field to the cheers of the audience. Afterwards, they will say their anthem and a prayer, followed by the kick-off. The selection of games they will play include track-and-field, softball, horseshoe tosses, volleyball and more. However, some of the game types will only be played depending on how many individuals participate, such as bocce ball, in which two teams try to throw their balls as close to a jack as possible.
Although JCJC is not managing the event, student organizations will be helping with it. The most common way to support is by cheering in the bleachers, which provides motivation for the participants; the football team will also be out on the field to help.
